I lose power about 11 times a year at this house and it can range from a few hours to a few days without power, and when you have well water, meaning no city services, you need electricity in order for the pump to be able to deliver that water to your house. On top of that, we get super cold winters up here, and being that this is a weekend home I didn’t want to take the chance of a power outage that kills my heat and then I have frozen pipes, which turn into burst pipes, which turns into a very expensive repair.
So, really, when you think about it, a backup generator should be a no brainer. It protects my investment when I’m not home and it allows me to enjoy my home no matter the elements when I am there.
This is a propane powered generator, which also runs waaaayyyy more efficiently than a gas or diesel powered alternative, and I will tell you, hands down, Kohler is the best in the industry…ask around…if I had one of my subs say “oh you’re installing a Kohler, nice, they’re the best” pretty much everyone on the job said it.
I also got two portable generators from Kohler Power: a battery powered generator (encube) that can be plugged in to charge, or hooked up to optional solar panels and a gas powered generator (Pro 9.0E). BOTH of these generators came in super handy while under construction…here are my use cases in the event you are considering one or both of these options:
So, I was sleeping in the barn in February and the wind was blowing so hard I thought I was taking the barn to Oz. I lost power and the temp started dropping pretty quickly. Because the Encube is battery powered it is safe to operate inside, so I was able to plug in a portable electric heater, my refrigerator and my phone and laptop to ensure I was warm and all charged up for the next morning.
The portable gas generator came in handy when we had cut power to the site while we were moving my electrical service. I was able to not only power the man lift that had a dead battery, but also charge tool batteries for the guys, and run Tom’s tile saw…pretty impressive little unit!
