custom closets

Closets are one of those things that I want to function perfectly for me, but I usually don’t know where to start when to comes to laying them out. this is largely due to how many parts and pieces are available from these custom closet companies. So, I really loved ClosetMaid’s approach, we’ll get to the product, but I want to start with their design services. When you have a million moving parts going on at the same time during your home renovation it is really nice to be able to hand these folks the interior dimensions to your closets (they’ll even come out and measure for you if you’re unsure of yourself) and say you take the first crack at it, and here’s why I love that:

  1. Usually, by the time you’re ready to get into the closets there is so much else going on that you can easily fall behind, and then can wind up causing yourself a delay

  2. While I know what I want, the ClosetMaid people know their product, and their product lines better than I ever could, no matter how long I have been in the design and construction world.

So with that said, I was thrilled to let the designers at ClosetMaid take the first pass at all my closet layouts. Once they sent me a PDF from each one Jacey and I sat down and we asked each other ‘How do we intend to use this closet?’. We would answer the question together and then I would make suggestions about how we might want to change the layout (with her input as well), and then we sent a noted set of PDFs back to ClosetMaid, they made the adjustments we asked for and that was it, I signed off to go to production.

Had I attempted this myself I would have gotten to the same result, but it would have taken 2 or 3 times longer to get there. So the process was a big selling point for me.

The other big selling point was the product, or I should say product(S) they offer. ClosetMaid does a really good job of hitting a lot of different price points; they have everything from the DIY wire shelves all the way up to a fully custom Master Bedroom walk in. We used a combination of products: the highest-end MasterSuite line in our walk-ins to their new ShelfTrack EVO track system we put in the rental unit.

Lastly, they also do a full install, which you might be saying ‘well, if I’m in a renovation already my GC can just do that…’. This is true, but much like the design process, the installers install these particular products day in and day out, which means they will be super efficient when it comes to installing all the little bits and pieces that make up your custom closets + it keeps your GC free to keep moving your project toward final inspections.
